The First Fourty-Eight

1. In Auschwitz Jews went through a process. Describe the first 48 hours for Jews once the doors opened to the cattle cars. Describe what is lost or gained with each significant event.
The first thing that happened was when the doors were opened they saw the Germans, crematoriums and all the other people. The Germans then filed them into two sections, men and women. Then they were divided further by those who were going to the barracks and those who were going to die. Throughout the next few days they were shuttled from barrack to barrack, each time being disinfected, shaved and given clothes to wear. During the day they were sent to work. They were given very little food or water each night.
At first they lost all their possessions, friends and family. Throughout all of the rest of the events they lose their freedom, confidence, and hope that they will survive.

3. Elie says, "We spoke of everything without mentioning those who had disappeared." Why would they not speak of them? To whom is he referring?
Without speaking of them one does not have to think of the fact that they are probably dead and they can keep the hope alive that they will be seen again. Also without thinking of what happened to them you could keep believing that it would not happen to you. He is referring to the loved ones that were lost to the cruelty of the Nazis.

I liked how you answered number three. If he thought about his family chances are he would think they were dead. So if he didn't think about him he would think they were still alive, there was still that hope. Also in the first question it was good that you talked about what happened when they got there but maybe describe more about what the Jews were thinking. Other then that good job!

Your answers are good. Its just sad how they lost pretty much everything when they were separated from their family and friends. I like how you said they lost their confidence, freedom and their hope to live because thats very true. They didn't know what was going to happen to them or where they were headed. You second question was good also. Why would they want to speak of them when they really didn't know what was happening to them. They didn't want to talk about their loved ones when they know they are no longer alive.

The reason they were given very little food at night was because they had food during the day they had soup and bread.

I agree with your answers. It is sad that they lost everything they had and were split up with their family. The sentence were you said confidence , freedom, and their hope to live was very strong.

I like the way you answered the questions. They got strait to the point. They were very strait to the point. It would of been horrible to be separated.

Good job...I like how you answered both Questions!!! In number 1 I think you could of given a bit more detail but you did a good job. Then in Question # 3 it was great! I honestly didn't know how to answer that. I could in my head, but I couldn't put it down on paper if you know what I mean! :) Good post!

I really liked your answer to question three, you answered it perfectly. I liked how you said "...without thinking og what happened to them you could keep believing that it would not happen to you." Good work! By the way what is that picture? I can't really see it.

Lindee, we did not talk about what they thought because we were not there and we do not know exactly how they felt or what they were thinking. We would not feel right trying to put into words what they were thinking or feeling when we really have no idea.
Jackie G., we meant to say that they were given very little food or water at all, not just at night. They were starved.

Shelby Lynn, the picture is of all the prisoners clothes falling out of the storage room because they had nowhere else to put them.
